Château Fleur Cardinale

Château Fleur Cardinale was purchased in 2001 by Dominique and Florence Decoster, who previously operated a porcelain business in Limoges. The estate traces its origins to the early 20th century when it was known as Clos Bel-Air. It was renamed in 1975 by then owners the Obessier family, who chose the name to honor two of their racehorses called Fleur and Cardinale. Since 2017, the second generation of the Decoster family, Ludovic and Caroline, has managed the property. They have overseen significant investments in the winery facilities and shifted the brand identity toward an approach they describe as modern and dynamic.

The vineyard is situated in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse on the eastern edge of the Saint-Émilion appellation. The vines are planted on a clay-limestone plateau that reaches an elevation of 75 meters. This location provides a cooler microclimate compared to the central Saint-Émilion plateau, often resulting in a later ripening period. The estate spans approximately 27 hectares and is primarily planted with Merlot, followed by Cabernet Franc and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The family initiated a formal conversion to organic farming in 2021 and achieved full certification in 2024. In the cellar, the team uses stainless steel tanks for fermentation and ages the wine in French oak barrels, typically using a high proportion of new wood to complement the fruit concentration.

The property earned its status as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé in 2006, a position it has maintained in subsequent classifications. The wines are recognized for a style that combines ripeness and concentration with the natural freshness provided by the cooler vineyard site. In addition to the grand vin, the estate produces a second red wine named Intuition de Fleur Cardinale, which focuses on earlier drinkability. The family recently introduced a white wine, Fleur Cardinale Blanc, made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Sémillon. The estate is often cited by critics for its consistent quality and for representing a contemporary expression of Right Bank Bordeaux.
