Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

The modern identity of Château Beau-Séjour Bécot began in 1969 when Michel Bécot purchased the estate, though its viticultural roots reach back to the Gallo-Roman era. The property was originally part of a larger estate called Beau-Séjour, which was divided in 1869 between the heirs of Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe. One half became what is now Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarrosse, while the other eventually passed to the Bécot family. Today, the estate remains under family management, led by the third generation, Juliette Bécot and her husband Julien Barthe, following years of stewardship by Michel’s sons, Gérard and Dominique.

Located on the western limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, the vineyard spans 22 hectares, with approximately 17 hectares under vine. The terroir is characterized by deep clay over a solid limestone base, which provides natural water regulation and a distinct mineral profile to the fruit. The plantings are dominated by Merlot, comprising about 80 percent of the vineyard, complemented by 20 percent Cabernet Franc. Winemaking involves manual harvesting and parcel-by-parcel vinification in a gravity-fed cellar inaugurated in 2023. The wines age for roughly 16 months in a combination of new oak barrels, foudres, and clay amphorae, with much of the maturation occurring in seven hectares of ancient subterranean limestone quarries located beneath the vines.

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is a Premier Grand Cru Classé B in the Saint-Émilion classification, a status it has held since the system's inception in 1955. The estate famously lost this rank in 1986 after the Bécot family merged several neighboring vineyard plots without prior administrative approval, but it regained the title in 1996. The property produces its namesake grand vin alongside a second wine, Petit Bécot, and is recognized for its balance of fresh fruit and limestone-driven structure. It maintains a position as one of the leading estates on the Right Bank, noted for adopting modern technical innovations while preserving the historical integrity of its unique underground cellars.
