Casa Agrícola Roboredo Madeira, commonly known as CARM, is a family owned estate with agricultural roots in the Upper Douro dating back to the middle of the 17th century. The modern era of the business began in 1966 when Celso Madeira planted the family's first vineyard using mechanical terraces, a significant technological advancement for the region at the time. Today, the operation remains strictly a family concern, managed by the Roboredo Madeira family with a focus on integrating traditional viticulture with modern production standards. In 2004, the family constructed a specialized winery at Quinta das Marvalhas to centralize their winemaking and olive oil production.
The vineyards are located exclusively in the Douro Superior, a rugged and remote sub-region near the Spanish border characterized by a warm, dry climate and poor schist soils. CARM manages approximately 200 hectares of vineyards alongside 220 hectares of olive groves and 60 hectares of almond orchards, all of which are certified organic. The estate was a pioneer of organic agriculture in Portugal, converting its operations in 1995. Winemaking is overseen by António Magalhães Ribeiro, who has been with the producer since 2002. The cellar utilizes traditional stone lagares for some fermentations while employing modern temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and fine grain French oak barrels for aging, aiming to express the specific terroir of the Douro International Natural Park.
CARM is recognized for its range of estate bottled wines that highlight indigenous Portuguese varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz for reds, and Rabigato and Viosinho for whites. The portfolio includes the Classic, Reserva, and Grande Reserva tiers, as well as the premium Maria de Lourdes and CM labels. The producer has gained particular attention for its innovative sulfur free Touriga Nacional, which relies on high concentrations of natural polyphenols for preservation. Beyond wine, the estate is highly regarded for its organic extra virgin olive oils and gourmet products, maintaining a reputation as a leading producer of high altitude, sustainable agriculture in the Upper Douro.
