Bodegas Vega Sicilia

Eloy Lecanda y Chaves founded Bodegas Vega Sicilia in 1864 after inheriting the estate in 1859. Having trained in Bordeaux, he returned to the Ribera del Duero with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec to plant alongside the local variety then known as Tinto del Pais. The winery gained international recognition in the early 20th century under the ownership of the Herrero family and winemaker Txomin Garramiola. In 1982, the year the Ribera del Duero DO was established, the Álvarez family purchased the estate from Hans Neuman. Under the leadership of Pablo Álvarez, the family formed the TEMPOS Vega Sicilia group and expanded their holdings to other regions while maintaining the original winery as their primary property.

The estate covers nearly 1,000 hectares, with 210 hectares dedicated to vineyards divided into 52 specific plots. These vines grow in complex soils featuring 19 taxonomic classifications, including limestone, marl, and chalk under layers of clay and silt. Vineyards are situated on a plateau at 700 to 900 meters above sea level, where a continental climate provides hot days and cold nights. Winemaking emphasizes lengthy aging and a combination of wooden vats and barrels. The winery maintains an on-site cooperage where master coopers build American oak barrels. Most wines undergo fermentation in oak tanks using native yeasts before spending several years in a mix of new and used French and American oak to develop oxidative stability.

Vega Sicilia is best known for Único, a wine produced only in exceptional vintages and aged for at least ten years before release. This flagship label typically blends Tempranillo with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for structure. Valbuena 5º is the other primary label, representing a shorter aging period of five years and focusing more on the expression of the Tinto Fino variety. The winery also produces Único Reserva Especial, a rare blend of multiple vintages that follows a traditional Spanish custom of combining the best harvests. These wines are regarded as some of the most prestigious and collectible in Spain, often compared to the first growths of Bordeaux for their longevity and structural depth. The estate remains a member of Primum Familiae Vini, an association of leading family-owned wineries.
