Producer
Bodegas Protos was established in 1927 by eleven childhood friends in the village of Peñafiel. Originally operating under the name Bodegas Ribera del Duero, it was the first winery founded in what is now one of Spain's most prominent red wine regions. When the local regulatory council was formed in 1982, the winery ceded its original name to the new Denominación de Origen and rebranded as Protos, which means first in Greek. The company remains a public limited company owned by approximately 250 families, including several third-generation descendants of the founding members. Edmundo Bayón currently serves as the president of the board of directors.
The estate manages 1,400 hectares of vineyards across various parts of Castilla y León. Its primary operations are centered in Peñafiel, where it uses a facility designed by architect Richard Rogers that connects to two kilometers of ancient underground tunnels for aging wine. In 2006, the producer expanded into the Rueda appellation by building a dedicated facility in La Seca to produce white wines. The Ribera del Duero vineyards are planted with Tinto Fino on limestone and clay soils at high altitudes, while the Rueda sites focus on Verdejo in gravelly soils. Winemaking involves manual harvesting, careful grape selection at sorting tables, and aging in French and American oak barrels.
The producer is best known for its red wines classified as Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva, which are made from 100 percent Tempranillo. Its portfolio also includes high-end labels like Protos'27 and Finca el Grajo Viejo, alongside a significant production of Verdejo from Rueda and Rosado from Cigales. The brand maintains a distribution network spanning more than 100 countries and is frequently recognized for its historical role in establishing quality standards for Spanish viticulture. Recent accolades include high rankings in global lists of admired wine brands and multiple awards for its technical contributions to the industry. The winery continues to influence the region's profile through its mix of large-scale production and specialized single-vineyard bottlings.
