Bodegas Félix Callejo

Bodegas Félix Callejo was established in 1989 by Félix Callejo and his wife Pilar in the village of Sotillo de la Ribera, located in the northern part of the Ribera del Duero appellation. Félix Callejo came from a long line of wine brokers and growers, taking over his family's vineyards at a young age before eventually launching his own winery. Today, the estate is managed by the second generation of the family, including Beatriz, Noelia, José Félix, and Cristina. The current winemaking direction is led by José Félix and Noelia Callejo, both of whom completed internships at prominent international estates such as Petrus in Bordeaux, Araujo in California, and Viña Cobos in Argentina. These experiences informed their decision to modernize the winery's style while returning to traditional, site-specific viticulture.

The estate encompasses approximately 55 hectares of vineyards distributed across 27 distinct plots. These holdings are situated at high altitudes between 830 and 930 meters, which is among the highest in the Duero river basin. This elevation exposes the vines to a continental climate with intense diurnal temperature shifts that help maintain natural acidity in the grapes. The terroir is highly diverse, ranging from limestone-heavy soils on the upper plateaus to gravel, clay, and sand in the lower valley areas. The family transitioned to organic viticulture in 2000, avoiding chemical fertilizers and herbicides. In the cellar, they utilize indigenous yeasts and have shifted away from heavily toasted American oak in favor of French barrels to better showcase the nuances of each specific parcel.

The producer is best known for its move away from standard regional classifications such as Crianza and Reserva in favor of a terroir-driven model. Their portfolio includes the entry-level Flores de Callejo and the site-specific Majuelos de Callejo and Parajes de Callejo. The flagship wine, Félix Callejo, is a high-altitude expression of Tinto Fino, while Finca Valdelroble represents a single-estate wine from the highest limestone soils. Although Tinto Fino is the dominant grape, the winery also produces white wine from the native Albillo Mayor variety and uses Garnacha and Merlot in certain blends. The estate received notable recognition when José Félix and Noelia Callejo were named Winemakers of the Year by Tim Atkin in 2021, cementing their reputation as leaders of the contemporary movement in Ribera del Duero.
