Bodegas Caro

Bodegas Caro was established in 1999 as a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family. This venture combines the French viticultural heritage of the Rothschilds with the high altitude expertise of the Catenas, specifically Nicolás Catena Zapata. The name of the winery is derived from the first two letters of each family surname. Currently, the estate is led by Saskia de Rothschild and Laura Catena, representing the next generation of both families. The production facility is located in a historic 1884 building in the Godoy Cruz district of Mendoza, which serves as the central hub for aging and cellar operations.

The estate sources fruit from various high altitude districts within Mendoza, including Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. Significant vineyard holdings and sourced plots are located in Altamira, Gualtallary, and San Pablo, with elevations ranging from 800 to 1,600 meters above sea level. The terroir across these sites is characterized by alluvial soils and limestone deposits that provide distinct mineral qualities. Winemaking follows a philosophy that blends traditional Bordeaux methods with Argentine varietal expression. Grapes are typically fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel or concrete tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels produced at the Rothschild cooperage in Pauillac.

The signature wine of the estate is CARO, a concentrated blend that emphasizes Malbec supported by Cabernet Sauvignon. This flagship bottling is designed for long term aging and is noted for its balance and structural precision. The portfolio also includes Petit CARO, which is a second label offering a similar blend with a focus on approachability and fruit intensity. Aruma is a third major label, produced as a pure Malbec to showcase the specific character of the Uco Valley without the influence of blending partners. These wines have established a reputation for integrating European elegance with the power of Mendoza fruit.
