Baron Philippe de Rothschild

Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. is a family-owned company based in Pauillac, France. The family's involvement in Bordeaux began in 1853 when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased Château Brane-Mouton, renaming it Château Mouton Rothschild. However, the modern company was shaped by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who took control of the estate in 1922. He introduced estate bottling in 1924, a practice that challenged the power of Bordeaux merchants at the time. In 1933, he founded the trading company now known as Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. Following his death in 1988, his daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild led the company until 2014. It is currently managed by her three children, with Philippe Sereys de Rothschild serving as Chairman and CEO.

The company manages three classified growths in the Pauillac appellation: Château Mouton Rothschild, Château d'Armailhac, and Château Clerc Milon. These estates are located on deep gravelly soils that provide natural drainage and reflect heat to the vines. Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy oversees technical operations for these properties. Winemaking for the top estates follows traditional methods, including hand-harvesting and fermentation in large oak vats. The firm also produces branded wines, most notably Mouton Cadet, which was created in 1930. These wines are sourced from partner growers across the Bordeaux region and blended at the company facility in Saint-Laurent-Medoc.

The flagship of the portfolio is Château Mouton Rothschild, which achieved First Growth status in 1973 after decades of lobbying by Baron Philippe. It is recognized for its artist-designed labels, featuring original works by figures like Picasso and Dali every year since 1945. Mouton Cadet remains one of the most widely sold Bordeaux wines in the world. The company has expanded internationally through partnerships, creating Opus One in California with Robert Mondavi and Almaviva in Chile with Concha y Toro. These ventures established the firm as a leader in global viticulture while maintaining its roots in the traditional terroir of the Medoc.
