Winzerkeller Sommerach was established in 1901 by a group of local families who sought to overcome economic hardship through collaboration. It is the oldest winegrowers cooperative in the Franken region and currently includes 90 families who collectively manage nearly 200 hectares of land. The organization operates under a model where each member family tends to its own small parcels while centralizing the processing and marketing of the wines. This cooperative was part of a broader movement that transformed the regional wine industry by focusing on collective bargaining and technical modernization. Frank Dietrich has served as the managing director since 2005, guiding the cooperative through major architectural updates.
The vineyards are located on the wine island of the southern Main loop, particularly within the Maindreieck area. The most significant holdings are in the Sommeracher Katzenkopf and Sommeracher Rosenberg sites. These vineyards are characterized by shell limestone soils, known as Muschelkalk, which contribute a specific mineral profile to the wines. The terroir benefits from the proximity to the Main river, which helps regulate temperatures during the growing season. The cooperative practices sustainable viticulture and holds certification from the Fair and Green standard. Winemaking involves separate processing for each grape variety and vineyard location, often using multiple harvest selections to ensure fruit reaches full maturity. This approach emphasizes low yields and includes aging in both stainless steel tanks and traditional wooden barrels.
Silvaner is the primary variety and represents the cooperative's most recognized output, alongside Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, and various red varieties like Domina. The product range is organized into a quality pyramid that includes the entry level Edition St. Valentin, the traditional Fraenkische Klassik bottled in Bocksbeutel, and the premium Concept No. 1 and Supremus lines. The cooperative received attention for its modern Weinreich facility which was completed in 2006 to house its vinotheque and tasting rooms. It is frequently ranked as one of the best wine cooperatives in Germany and has earned awards from bodies such as the DLG and international wine critics for its dry white wines and rare sweet selections.
