Weingut Lustig is a family estate located in Rohrendorf an der Pulkau, situated within the western Weinviertel region of Lower Austria. The property history as a family holding began in 1890 when Josef Lustig purchased an inn and a small farm in the Pulkau valley. While the family remained active in farming and hospitality for decades, the business shifted its focus toward specialized viticulture starting in the early 1960s. Erich Lustig, who previously managed a local wine bar and restaurant, assumed control of the winery in 2000 and now operates it alongside his wife, Annemaria, and their son, Maximillian.
The vineyards are established on deep loess soils, which are a defining characteristic of the terroir around the city of Retz. These soils provide a mineral-rich environment and good water retention, which are favorable for the regional climate of warm summer days and cooling evening breezes. The estate manages several specific vineyard sites, including Sonnleite, Hinterleite, and Steinpetz. Winemaking practices emphasize environmental sustainability, and the winery holds the Nachhaltig Austria certification. In the cellar, the team uses temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to conduct fermentations, aiming to preserve the primary fruit aromatics and the natural acidity of the grapes.
The estate is primarily known for its production of Grüner Veltliner, which is offered in various styles including the regional Weinviertel DAC designation. These wines are typically characterized by the spicy, peppery notes associated with the variety in this part of Lower Austria. The portfolio also includes white varieties such as Riesling, Gelber Muskateller, and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as red wines made from Zweigelt and Blauburger. The winery maintains a reputation for producing clean, variety focused wines that reflect the specific characteristics of the western Weinviertel landscape.
