Producer
Founded on July 10, 1900, the Vier Jahreszeiten Winzer eG originated from a gathering of 75 winegrowing families in the town of Bad Dürkheim. The cooperative takes its name from the Zu den vier Jahreszeiten inn, a local establishment where the founders held their meetings and maintained their headquarters for many years. Throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the entity grew through several significant mergers with neighboring cooperatives in Freinsheim, Friedelsheim, and Laumersheim. A major expansion occurred in 2018 when the Gebietswinzergenossenschaft Palmberg joined the group. Currently, the cooperative is comprised of approximately 300 members, with nearly 50 families dedicated to viticulture on a full-time basis.
The cooperative oversees a vineyard area of more than 500 hectares situated along the Mittelhaardt stretch of the Pfalz. These holdings encompass a wide range of geological conditions, providing the fruit for a diverse portfolio of styles. Winemaking operations are led by Volker Richter, who manages the intake and vinification across two primary cellar locations in Bad Dürkheim and Laumersheim. The facility employs a combination of modern and traditional methods, including the use of temperature controlled stainless steel for aromatic preservation and large casks crafted from local Palatinate forest oak for maturation. This approach allows the estate to produce both accessible everyday wines and more structured bottlings that reflect the local terroir.
While Riesling is the primary focus of the portfolio, the estate produces a comprehensive selection of Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, and Spätburgunder. They have also integrated international grapes like Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Tempranillo into their lineup, alongside modern varieties such as Souvignier Gris and Muscaris. The cooperative has earned substantial industry accolades, being named the 2023 Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year by the DLG and recognized as the top cooperative in the Pfalz by the Meininger Verlag. Every September, the estate plays a central role in the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt, which is the largest wine festival globally. This event highlights their position as a high volume producer that maintains quality standards sufficient for top national awards.
