Tenute Barone di Valforte
Tenute Barone di Valforte is a historic estate in the Abruzzo region of Italy, held by the Sorricchio di Valforte family for over nine generations. Family records trace their status as landowners in the area back to the 14th century. The name Sorricchio is derived from a traditional sickle used to harvest corn, a symbol that appears on the family's ancient coat of arms. Management of the estate currently rests with brothers Francesco and Guido Sorricchio di Valforte, supported by Guido's daughter, Annamaria, who represents the continuing family legacy in the local wine industry.
The vineyards cover 52 hectares within a larger 300 hectare property in Silvi, located in the heart of the Colline Teramane DOCG. These vines are planted at altitudes ranging from 150 to 350 meters, where they are exposed to maritime breezes from the Adriatic Sea and cooling influences from the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains. The terroir is defined by a mix of clay and sandy soils, and the vines are managed using the T-buttressed Cordon Espalier system. Farming follows sustainable methods, including a photovoltaic power system and reduced chemical inputs. In the cellar, the family employs a combination of temperature controlled fermentation and traditional aging in French oak barriques and tonneaux, housed in a barrel room dating to the 18th century.
The producer is best known for its expressions of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, specifically the Colle Sale bottling produced under the Colline Teramane DOCG designation and a long aged Riserva. The estate also focuses on indigenous white grapes, producing Trebbiano d'Abruzzo under the Villa Chiara label, alongside varietal Pecorino and Passerina. Its Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is frequently cited by the family as a signature wine that reflects the historical identity of the region. The winery has established a reputation for balancing technical precision with local tradition, utilizing soft pressing and cold stabilization to maintain the aromatic profile of its native grape varieties.
