The Stroppiana estate is a family operated winery located in the Rivalta hamlet of La Morra. The family history in viticulture began in the mid twentieth century when Giuseppe Stroppiana and his son in law Oreste started purchasing agricultural land in the communes of La Morra and Monforte d'Alba. For several decades, the family primarily sold their grape harvest to other local winemakers, reserving only a small portion for private consumption. Today, the estate is managed by the third and fourth generations, led by Dario Stroppiana and his wife Stefania along with their children Altea and Leonardo.
The winery manages approximately 5.5 hectares of vineyards distributed across the municipalities of La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, and Verduno. Their primary holdings are situated in the San Giacomo sub zone of La Morra, where the soils are composed of calcareous marl and sand. Viticultural practices focus on integrated management and manual labor, including selective grape thinning during the summer months to ensure optimal fruit concentration. In the cellar, fermentation occurs in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for ten to fifteen days. The wines are aged in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller French oak tonneaux for approximately 24 months.
Stroppiana is best known for its production of site specific Barolo, including the San Giacomo, Bussia, and Leonardo cuvées. The Barolo San Giacomo takes its name from a local fifteenth century church and represents the traditional profile of La Morra fruit. In addition to Nebbiolo, the estate produces Barbera d'Alba Superiore, which is named Altea after the owners' daughter, and Dolcetto d'Alba. They also cultivate Nascetta, a rare indigenous white variety that they produce in both standard and acacia wood aged versions. The estate maintains a reputation for clear varietal expression and a transparent winemaking style that reflects their specific vineyard locations.
