Producer
Founded in 1973 by Italo Zingarelli, a film producer known for the Trinity spaghetti western series, the estate began with the purchase of the 93-hectare Le Macìe property in Castellina in Chianti. At the time of purchase, only two hectares were under vine, requiring extensive replanting and the restoration of a 14th-century hamlet to establish a functioning winery. Italo’s son, Sergio Zingarelli, took over management in 1989 and oversaw the expansion of the family’s holdings and a shift toward higher quality standards. The winery remains a family enterprise, with Sergio serving as president while his wife Daniela and children Andrea and Giulia occupy key roles in production and management. The family also acquired the historic Straccali brand in 1978, further diversifying their presence in the Tuscan wine market.
The producer manages approximately 600 hectares of land, with more than 200 hectares dedicated to vineyards across six distinct estates. Four properties, Le Macìe, Sant’Alfonso, Riserva di Fizzano, and Le Tavolelle, are located in the Castellina sub-zone of Chianti Classico. These sites feature soils of marly limestone and galestro at altitudes between 200 and 400 meters. The company also operates the CampoMaccione and Casa Maria estates in the Maremma coastal region, where they grow Vermentino and Sangiovese. Winemaking is led by Luca Francioni, who has been with the estate since 1989, with Lorenzo Landi serving as a consultant. The cellar style balances traditional practices with modern precision, employing sustainable viticulture certified under the national VIVA program. Vinification involves maceration on the skins for up to 14 days, followed by aging in Slavonian oak casks or French barriques.
Rocca delle Macìe is best known for its Chianti Classico range, specifically the Riserva and the Gran Selezione Sergio Zingarelli, which is produced from Sangiovese grown at the original Le Macìe estate. The portfolio also includes Super Tuscans such as Roccato, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Ser Gioveto. From their Maremma estates, they produce Morellino di Scansano and the Vigna L'Aja Bruciata Vermentino. The winery maintains a reputation for consistency and accessibility across a large production volume that exceeds one million bottles annually. Sergio Zingarelli’s two terms as President of the Chianti Classico Consortium solidified the estate’s status as a leading representative of the region on the international stage.
