Founded in 2003 by the Silva family, Poppy Wines represents a natural extension of a multi-generational farming history in California. The family began farming in the Salinas Valley in the late 1960s, gaining over 45 years of experience in the region before launching their own label. Today, the brand is the proprietary label of the Monterey Wine Company, a large-scale custom production facility in King City managed by John Silva. The winery name is a tribute to the California state flower, which the founders observed growing among the vine rows during their decades of farming the land.
The production draws from five family-owned vineyards located within the Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco appellations. Key holdings include the 220-acre Poppy Hillside Vineyard, which contains older Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines established in 1972, and the 254-acre Bella Vita Vineyard. Other sites like the Silva Family Vineyard and the organically farmed Beeswax Vineyard contribute to the diverse sourcing profile. The terroir in these areas is defined by well-drained alluvial soils and significant maritime influence from the Monterey Bay, where cooling winds provide the extended hang time necessary for developing natural acidity. Winemaking under chief winemaker Jamie Meves emphasizes site expression and texture. The process involves harvesting at optimal ripeness followed by fermentation at moderate temperatures with gentle pump-overs. A portion of the wine typically undergoes aging in French oak barrels for subtle structure, while the remainder is kept in stainless steel to maintain varietal freshness.
Poppy is primarily known for its varietal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are frequently cited for providing quality at an accessible price point. While the white and red wines of Monterey County form the core of the portfolio, the family also produces a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Paso Robles region through long-standing grower relationships. The label is widely recognized in the retail market as a reliable example of the cool-climate viticulture that characterizes the central coast of California. It has earned a reputation for consistency, often appearing in publications as a high-value choice for consumers looking for estate-grown Monterey fruit. The company maintains control over the entire process from vine to bottle, utilizing the technical resources of their state-of-the-art facility in King City.
