Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Joseph Phelps Vineyards was established in 1973 by Joseph Phelps, a construction executive who had previously led one of the largest building firms in the United States. Phelps purchased a 600-acre former cattle ranch in the Spring Valley area of St. Helena after developing an interest in wine while working on construction projects in Northern California. The estate remained family-owned for nearly 50 years until it was acquired by Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of LVMH, in June 2022. This acquisition marked a significant shift for the producer, which had been a prominent independent name in Napa Valley for decades.

The winery manages over 500 acres of estate vineyards across two major regions, with primary holdings in eight Napa Valley sub-appellations such as Oakville, Stags Leap District, and Rutherford. One of its most specific sites is the Backus Vineyard, located on the eastern hills of Oakville, which features steep slopes and iron-rich volcanic soils used for a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1999, the producer expanded to the western Sonoma Coast by developing the Freestone estate for the cultivation of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Winemaking operations are currently overseen by Ryan Knoth, who joined in 2023, following a lineage of long-tenured winemakers who focused on site-specific expressions and sustainable farming.

The producer is most widely recognized for Insignia, a wine first released with the 1974 vintage as California's first proprietary red blend to use a brand name rather than a varietal designation. This Bordeaux-style wine typically leads with Cabernet Sauvignon and is blended from the best fruit across the estate's diverse Napa Valley holdings each year. Beyond Insignia, the portfolio includes a range of varietal wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Chardonnay, alongside the single-vineyard Cabernet from the Backus site. The estate holds a central place in the history of the region for its early adoption of proprietary branding and its role in establishing the market for high-end California red blends.
