Producer
Jean-Marc Burgaud established his estate in 1989 in the village of Villié Morgon. He belongs to a family of winegrowers from Lantignié and launched his own operation after completing his oenological studies and marrying into a family with vineyard holdings in Morgon. Burgaud manages the estate as a grower producer, overseeing both the viticulture and the winemaking processes personally. The estate has grown over the decades through the acquisition of parcels in the heart of the Beaujolais Crus, reaching a current size of approximately 19 hectares.
The domaine encompasses 19 hectares of vineyards, with 13 hectares located in the Morgon appellation. The most significant holdings are on the Côte du Py hill, where the soil consists of blue stone, disintegrated schist, and manganese. Burgaud also manages five hectares of Beaujolais Villages in his hometown of Lantignié and one hectare in Régnié. He employs traditional viticultural techniques including high density planting of 10,000 vines per hectare and manual harvesting. Winemaking involves whole cluster fermentation in cement vats, following the semi carbonic maceration method. He emphasizes long macerations, sometimes lasting up to 15 days, to extract structure and tannins suitable for aging.
The flagship wine of the estate is the Morgon Côte du Py, which is often released in specific parcel designations such as James, named after his father in law, or Javernières. Burgaud also produces a Morgon Les Charmes and several wines from the Régnié and Beaujolais Villages appellations, including a small production of white wine from Chardonnay. His wines are frequently noted for their depth and ability to improve in the cellar for a decade or more, often developing characteristics similar to Pinot Noir as they age. He is recognized by regional critics as a benchmark producer for the Morgon appellation and focuses on site specific expressions of the Gamay grape.
