Producer
The company was established in 1815 when João dos Santos Fonseca made his first documented sale of Port wine. In 1822, Manoel Pedro Guimaraens acquired a majority stake in the firm, beginning a lineage of family leadership that lasted for over a century. During the 19th century, the house established a presence in London and expanded its reach across European markets. The firm faced financial challenges during the Second World War, leading to its acquisition in 1948 by Taylor Fladgate and Yeatman. Today, it operates as a key member of The Fladgate Partnership, a group that remains family owned and managed. David Guimaraens serves as the head winemaker, representing the sixth generation of his family to oversee production.
Production is centered on fruit from three primary estates located in the Cima Corgo sub region of the Douro Valley. Quinta do Panascal, situated on the steep banks of the Távora River, provides the backbone of the house blends with its concentrated fruit. Quinta do Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António contribute additional structure and aromatic depth. The vineyards are planted on stony schist soils that require manual labor due to the extreme gradients of the land. Winemaking at the estate quintas adheres to traditional methods, specifically the use of granite lagares where grapes are tread by foot. This process is used for all vintage selections to ensure gentle extraction of tannins and color. The house has also been a leader in environmental management, with Quinta de Santo António being one of the first vineyards in the region to receive organic certification.
This producer is recognized for a specific style of Port characterized by high fruit intensity and a lush texture. The flagship wine is the Vintage Port, which the house declares only in years of exceptional quality. In years when a full vintage is not declared, the firm often releases a Guimaraens Vintage Port, which is sourced from the same estates but typically reaches maturity sooner than the classic bottling. The house is also widely known for Bin No. 27, a reserve ruby port that has become one of the most visible labels in the category. Critics often categorize the wines as more opulent than those of other major houses. The estate has maintained a high standing among collectors, frequently receiving top scores from major wine publications for its older vintages.
