Domaine Marc Colin et Fils

Marc Colin and his wife Michèle established the estate in 1970, beginning with approximately six hectares of vines inherited from the Colin and Ponavoy families. The domaine underwent significant expansion during the 1980s and 1990s, eventually growing to about 30 hectares before subsequent family divisions. Two of Marc's sons eventually departed to establish their own labels, with Pierre-Yves leaving in 2005 and Joseph following in 2017. Today, the estate is managed by their siblings, Damien and Caroline Colin, who oversee about 12 hectares of vineyards across 26 different appellations.

The estate is headquartered in the village of Saint-Aubin but manages parcels in several Côte de Beaune communes, including Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Santenay. Vineyard management follows sustainable practices, often described as lutte raisonnée, which avoids chemical treatments unless necessary. The family emphasizes manual harvesting and regular soil cultivation to maintain grape health. In the cellar, Damien Colin employs a traditional approach characterized by indigenous yeast fermentation and aging in French oak barrels. New oak usage is typically restricted to 10 to 30 percent, depending on the specific cuvée, to preserve the natural fruit profile. The wines spend extended time on their lees without the use of bâtonnage, or lees stirring, which helps maintain tension and mineral focus. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to occur naturally, and the final wines are bottled with minimal fining or filtration.

While the domaine produces a range of red wines from Pinot Noir, its reputation is primarily built on its white wines. The estate is considered a benchmark for the Saint-Aubin appellation, particularly for its premier cru holdings in sites such as En Remilly and La Chatenière. These vineyards are situated on steep, limestone-rich slopes that produce wines defined by their clarity and salinity. The portfolio also features high-profile offerings from the grand cru sites of Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet. Critics often compare the estate's precise style to that of leading producers in Meursault, noting its role in elevating the status of Saint-Aubin within the broader Burgundy region.
