The Chavy family has a history in Puligny Montrachet dating back to 1820, spanning six generations of grape growing. For much of that time, the family sold their fruit to local negociants. It was not until 1986 that Gerard Chavy began estate bottling and marketing wines under the family name. The domaine operated as a single entity until Gerard reached retirement age, leading to a division of the estate between his two sons in 2003.
Following the split, the vineyard holdings were divided between Alain Chavy and Jean Louis Chavy, who now operate separate domaines. The original estate was highly regarded for its prime parcels in several of the most significant premier crus of Puligny Montrachet. These include holdings in Les Folatieres, Les Perrieres, and Les Clavoillons. Notably, the Chavy family is one of only three owners in the Les Clavoillons vineyard, alongside Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Jean Louis Chavy. Their winemaking approach traditionally focused on whole bunch pressing, fermentation with natural yeasts, and aging in French oak barrels for up to 16 months.
Domaine Gerard Chavy et Fils earned a reputation for producing classic, dependable white Burgundies that emphasized fruit purity and site specificity. While the original label is no longer the primary bottling for the family's current production, its legacy continues through the independent estates of the sons. These successor domaines maintain the family's traditional techniques, such as limited use of new oak and the avoidance of batonnage, to preserve the mineral character and tension associated with the terroir of Puligny Montrachet.
