Domaine Didier Dagueneau

Didier Dagueneau established his eponymous estate in 1982 in the village of Saint-Andelain. Dagueneau was a fourth-generation winemaker who initially pursued a career as a professional motorcycle sidecar racer and dog-sledder before returning to his family's winemaking roots. He was influenced by the methods of Henri Jayer in Burgundy and Edmond Vatan in Sancerre, leading him to create his own domaine rather than joining the existing family property. Since his death in a 2008 aviation accident, his children Louis-Benjamin and Charlotte Dagueneau have managed the estate. Louis-Benjamin currently serves as the head winemaker and was named winemaker of the year by La Revue du Vin de France in 2016.

The domaine manages approximately 12 hectares of vineyards primarily located on the flint-heavy hills of Saint-Andelain. Soil management focuses on the high concentration of clay and flint, known as silex, which characterizes the region's top sites. Vineyard work is labor-intensive and employs a high ratio of manual workers per hectare, comparable to the most prestigious estates in Burgundy. The estate uses organic and biodynamic viticulture, and certain plots are tilled with horses to avoid soil compaction. Winemaking is defined by the use of custom oak barrels, including the elongated cigar barrels designed to increase lees contact and small foudres. Fermentations are carried out using native yeasts, followed by extended aging on the lees without racking to build texture.

The portfolio includes several distinct cuvées that focus on individual terroir profiles. Silex is the flagship wine, sourced from vines grown on pure flint soil, while the Pur Sang cuvée comes from clay and limestone plots. Other notable labels include Buisson Renard and the extremely rare Astéroïde, which is produced from ungrafted vines. Beyond the Loire Valley, the family produces sweet and dry Petit Manseng in the Jurançon region under the label Les Jardins de Babylone. Many of these wines have been reclassified as Vin de France rather than using the Pouilly-Fumé or Sancerre appellations following disagreements with local authorities. The estate maintains a reputation for producing some of the most concentrated and long-lived Sauvignon Blanc in the world.
