Château Le Grand Verdus

The estate is centered around a 16th century Renaissance manor located in the commune of Sadirac. While the property has agricultural roots dating to the 11th century, its modern lineage began in 1846 when Claude Deschamps, an architect for Napoleon, acquired the site. Ownership eventually passed to his brother in law, Charles Le Grix de la Salle, and the family has remained in possession of the estate for four generations. After the Second World War, Philippe Le Grix de la Salle became the first member of the family to focus specifically on viticulture. In 1973, he withdrew the property from the local cooperative to produce and bottle wines under the Château Le Grand Verdus label. Today, the fourth generation, represented by Antoine Le Grix de la Salle and his sons Thomas and Edouard, manages the operation.

The vineyards cover approximately 120 hectares in the heart of the hilly Entre Deux Mers region. This landscape features significant topographical variety, with slopes reaching 80 meters in altitude and a complex soil composition of clay, limestone, and gravel distributed across three distinct estates. The family achieved organic certification for the 2023 vintage and employs agroecological practices to preserve the biodiversity of the surrounding woodlands. In the cellar, winemaking reflects a transition from traditional methods to modern precision, a shift originally influenced by the oenologist Emile Peynaud. Thomas Le Grix de la Salle oversees vinification, utilizing temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete vats alongside oak barrels and clay amphorae for aging.

Red wines produced under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation represent the core of the production, typically featuring blends of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The property is known for its Grande Réserve and various parcel based cuvées that focus on individual terroir expressions. It also produces dry whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, as well as a specialized press rosé. While maintaining traditional Bordeaux styles, the family has expanded the portfolio with experimental cuvées using varieties such as Syrah and Chenin Blanc. The estate is recognized for its independent distribution model and its ability to produce sophisticated wines outside the traditional classification systems of the Médoc or Saint Emilion.
