Bodegas Emilio Moro is a family estate spanning four generations of viticulture in Castilla y León. While the family history in grape growing dates back to the birth of the first Emilio Moro in 1891, the commercial winery was formally established in 1987 by José Moro Espinosa. He invested family savings to transition from bulk grape selling to bottling production under a dedicated family label. The first commercial vintage was released in 1989, coinciding with the early growth of the Ribera del Duero designation of origin. Today, the estate is managed by the third and fourth generations of the family, with Javier Moro serving as president. The family also maintains ownership of the separate Cepa 21 winery.
The winery manages approximately 200 hectares of estate vineyards located in Pesquera de Duero, an area frequently called the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero. These plots sit at elevations between 2,400 and 3,000 feet, featuring diverse soils composed of clay, limestone, and stone. Central to the winemaking is a unique, small-berried clone of Tempranillo, locally called Tinto Fino, which was recovered from the family's oldest vines. The estate emphasizes an environmentally friendly approach to viticulture, avoiding artificial irrigation to ensure that each vintage reflects the specific rainfall and weather conditions of its year. Production involves traditional aging in French and American oak barrels alongside modern innovations such as digital vineyard management systems used to track sustainability and vine health.
The producer moved away from the traditional Spanish classification system of Crianza and Reserva in 1998, choosing instead to use proprietary names based on specific vineyard sites and vine ages. The portfolio includes Finca Resalso, a young red named after a vineyard planted in 1932, and the flagship Emilio Moro label which debuted in 1989. Premium offerings include the Malleolus range, featuring single-vineyard bottlings such as Malleolus de Valderramiro and Malleolus de Sanchomartín. The winery also produces Clon de la Familia, a top-tier wine made from a selection of the best plots, with proceeds donated to the Emilio Moro Foundation. Recently, the family expanded into the El Bierzo region to produce white wines from the Godello variety and red wines from Mencía.
