Bodega Lamadrid

Guillermo García Lamadrid founded the winery in 2004 as a tribute to his mother, Matilde Lamadrid. Born in Cuba, García Lamadrid was sent to the United States as a child during the Cuban Revolution and later built a career in the food import and distribution industry in Puerto Rico. His extensive experience in logistics eventually led him to Mendoza, where he decided to establish a wine project that honored his family heritage. To house the operation, he purchased and restored a historic 1950s winery building in Luján de Cuyo. The estate remains a family enterprise today, with his daughter Gabriela García serving as a co-owner and global brand ambassador.

The production is centered on three distinct estate vineyards located in the Agrelo district of Luján de Cuyo. Finca La Matilde is the oldest property, featuring Malbec vines planted in 1929. Finca Lamadrid was planted in 1973, while Finca La Suiza was established in 2004. These vineyards sit at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level and consist of sandy and clay loam soils. The vines are irrigated using pure snowmelt water from the Andes Mountains. Head winemaker Angelina Yañez oversees a cellar program that prioritizes minimal intervention. This approach includes the use of indigenous yeasts for fermentation. Aging occurs in a mix of French oak and concrete, and most wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

The winery is recognized for its focus on single varietal expressions, especially Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Bonarda. Its flagship offering is the Matilde Malbec, a premium wine produced from the 1929 plantings in Agrelo. Other notable labels include the ZunZun co-fermented reds and the Los Bocheros line, which is named after the traditional Argentine game of bocce. The producer has established a reputation for delivering high quality at accessible price points, often receiving scores above 90 points from major wine critics such as James Suckling and Wine Spectator. This consistent performance has made Bodega Lamadrid a prominent representative of the Agrelo terroir in the international wine market.
