Azienda Agricola Canneto is located on the western slopes of the Montepulciano hill, near the church of San Biagio. The estate has a history of viticulture that spans several generations, originally belonging to the Pilacci-Waldergan family before it was purchased by its current owners in 1987. The buyers were a group of Swiss wine enthusiasts from Zurich who established Canneto AG to manage the property. They partnered with agronomist Ottorino De Angelis, who oversaw the acquisition and directed a comprehensive modernization program. This effort transformed the winery from a producer of bulk wine into an estate-bottling operation, which included the construction of a new cellar and the installation of contemporary winemaking technology.
The estate consists of a contiguous 48-hectare land parcel, with 30 hectares specifically dedicated to vineyards. Approximately 16 hectares of this land are registered for the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The vineyard sites are situated at elevations ranging between 350 and 400 meters above sea level and face primarily toward the south and southwest. The soil composition is characterized by marly gravel, clay, and sand. Since the 2017 vintage, the estate has maintained organic certification for all of its vineyards and its four hectares of olive groves. Technical management focuses on spurred cordon vine training and rigorous pruning to ensure low yields and concentrated fruit.
The flagship of the estate is the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is offered as a standard bottling, a Riserva, and a single-vineyard selection called Casina di Doro. The portfolio also includes Rosso di Montepulciano and an IGT Rosso Toscana blend named Filippone, which combines Sangiovese with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Production is handled by winemaker Mauro Monicchi with the technical consultancy of enologist Carlo Ferrini. Most red wines undergo aging in large 30 to 50 hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels or 5 hectoliter French oak casks. This approach balances traditional Tuscan structure with modern technical precision, and the estate is known for its consistency and its location within a single, cohesive property.
