Producer
Alfredo Arribas, a professional architect from Barcelona, began his winemaking career in 2001 when he acquired the Clos del Portal estate in the Priorat region. His entry into viticulture followed a childhood spent visiting his grandfather, who was a grape grower in Ribera del Duero. His architectural background influenced the design of the estate winery, which was built to integrate with the surrounding topography and facilitate gravity-led production. Initially establishing the Portal del Priorat project, Arribas later expanded his operations into the neighboring Montsant appellation. He remains the lead director and primary owner of several distinct labels including Clos del Portal, Trossos, and the Vins Nus series.
The producer manages approximately 50 hectares of land in Priorat, primarily situated between the villages of El Lloar and Bellmunt. These vineyards are located on steep terraces and costers with characteristic llicorella slate soils. Arribas employs organic and biodynamic farming methods across his holdings, which include both century-old vines and newer massal selections of Garnatxa, Cariñena, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc. Winemaking is characterized by a non-interventionist approach, utilizing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, short macerations, and minimal use of sulfur. His technical goal is to prioritize acidity and freshness over high alcohol and heavy extraction, often harvesting earlier than his regional peers to preserve the natural tension of the fruit.
The portfolio is organized into distinct series that highlight different aspects of Mediterranean terroir and elevation. The Clos del Portal wines, such as Somni and Negre de Negres, are known for their verticality and mineral expression of the southern Priorat slate. In Montsant, the Trossos range focuses on old-vine Cariñena and Garnatxa from varied soils including sand, clay, and limestone. The SiurAlta series under the Vins Nus label features high-altitude wines from vineyards at 700 to 800 meters, produced with little to no oak influence to focus on purity and transparency. Arribas has established a reputation for moving away from the historically dense and concentrated style of the region, instead producing wines valued for their elegance and drinkability.
